Yeast Infection Prevention

Vaginal yeast infections can be bothersome and once you’ve had one you want to quickly learn how to prevent it from retuning.  Luckily there are some simple things you can do to prevent a reoccurrence of a yeast infection.  For those who are confined to a wheelchair there are some extra steps you can take to avoid a yeast infection.  Below are some tips on preventing yeast infections.

The most general advice about preventing a vaginal yeast infection can also be applied to any type of yeast infection.  You want to keep areas that are normally moist clean and as dry as possible to prevent yeast from growing rapidly and causing infection.  The following list gives ideas of how to make that happen:

  • Keep the vaginal area clean.  Wash everyday.
  • Thoroughly dry the area after washing.
  • Wear cotton panties.  Cotton allows air to flow and helps keep things dry.
  • Wipe from front to back after using the bathroom.
  • Do not share things like towels, wash cloths, and underwear.
  • Wash items like towels, washcloths and underwear in warm water separate from other clothing.
  • Avoid tight clothes.
  • When you are menstruating change your sanitary product often.
  • Do not douche.
  • Avoid excessive use of antibiotics if possible.
  • Eat healthy.

A few other helpful guidelines are to avoid having sexual intercourse while experiencing a yeast infection as you can transfer the infection to your partner.  Also if you experience repeat infections often you may wish to switch your birth control pills as they may be the cause.

For those in a wheelchair that depend on others to help them with their hygiene, yeast infections can occur often.  In addition to the above pointers you may also want to look for a wool pad to sit on.  Wool is very good at absorbing extra moisture.  If you are allergic to wool or just can not find a wool seat pad then try to use something to avoid sitting on a plastic or synthetic surface that causes sweating and moisture retention.  You can also apply a powder designed for the vaginal area to keep moisture down.  These tips can help someone who must use wheelchair to avoid yeast infections.

Preventing yeast infections is actually a matter of adding a few simple things to your daily routine.  You will be grateful that you did when you stop experiencing the pain and itching form yeast infections.
